Life Is Fruity

Director Fushihara’s delicate, charming documentary won the Kinema Jumpo Best Film of the Year (Cultural Section) and tells the story of 90-year-old architect Shuichi Tsubata and his 87-year-old wife Hideko.

They live in Aichi Prefecture in a rambling house of Shuichi’s own design. In fact, Shuichi as a young architect was responsible for their entire “new town” residential area. Their garden is bursting with 70 types of vegetables and 50 types of fruits, and they live in harmony with nature and in gentle, cheerful acceptance of their own impending mortality. A moving film about love, marriage and our relationship with the world.
