JCCC Workshop Series: Cooking for Active Seniors

The JCCC’s Cooking for Active Seniors workshop series is designed for adults 55 and older who want to prepare simple, flavourful meals with confidence and ease. Each workshop emphasizes practical cooking techniques, accessible ingredients, and the pleasure of making delicious food in a welcoming, hands-on environment.

Each session introduces participants to nutrition basics, Japanese pantry ingredients, and a range of cooking methods suited to everyday home cooking. During the workshop, attendees prepare and cook a main dish along with either a side dish or dessert, then sit down to enjoy what they have made.

Recipes are selected with convenience in mind. The workshops prioritize proteins and vegetables that are commonly found in most refrigerators or easy to purchase at local grocery stores, making the dishes practical to recreate at home.

The series features Japanese Canadian homestyle recipes passed down through families, shared in community cookbooks, or drawn from the JCCC’s Just Add Shoyu cookbook. Some traditional Japanese recipes are also adapted from chefs who specialize in Japanese homestyle cooking. Whatever their source, the recipes are chosen for their ease, warmth, and enjoyment.
