Akihiro Dobashi’s popular novel Migawari Chushingura took the legendary historical incident of the 47 Ronin and added a liberal dose of comedy. The original story tells of a group of masterless samurai who seek revenge for the death of their Lord Asano who was compelled to perform seppuku (ritual suicide) for assaulting a powerful court official named Kira after the court official insulted him. But what would happen if Kira had an incompetent good-for-nothing younger brother to stand in for him? The film combines beautiful costuming and historical intrigue with zany screwball comedy to create a hugely entertaining tale of samurai whimsy.
