Ijusha and Shin Nisei Focus Groups

Are you a Japanese Canadian who identifies as either shin ijusha or shin nisei?

The JCCC Heritage Department is researching Japanese Canadian third places, or sites of gathering, in Toronto to understand how Japanese people in Toronto have made a place for themselves in the city from after WWII to the present day. The research will culminate in an exhibition at the JCCC.

We are interested in questions such as the following: What are the places that allowed Japanese Canadians to create a sense of belonging? To make sense of an unfamiliar city? What memories do people have of these places? What is the role of Japanese Canadian places in a changing Toronto?

To answer these questions, we want to hear from you!

A focus group for ijusha – defined as first-generation postwar immigrants from any period of time – will take place on August 7th at 6:30 pm at the JCCC, Room 2C, and will be recorded. This session will take place in Japanese and/or English (depending on the group’s comfort).

A focus group for shin nisei – defined as the children of first-generation postwar Japanese immigrants – will take place on August 8th at 6:30pm at the JCCC, Room 2C. This session will take place in English.

あなたは日系の新移住者または新二世ですか？ 

JCCCヘリテージ部門では日系カナダ人の皆様の第三の場所（自宅、学校、職場とは別に存在する、居心地のいい居場所のこと）についてリサーチを行っています。このリサーチにより、第2次世界大戦後から現在に至るまで、日系カナダ人がトロントでどのようにしてこの居場所を作り出してきたのかを究明したいと考えています。リサーチの結果はJCCCにて展示発表の予定です。 

リサーチでは次のような質問への回答を探しています： 

どんな場所が日系人の居場所となるのか？どんな場所が不案内な新しい街に馴染んでいく上で役立つのか？その場所についての思い出は？常に変化を続けるトロントでこのような日系人の居場所はどんな役割を持つのか？ 

私達のリサーチに協力してくれる方を探しています！ 

リサーチ日時： 

移住者グループ対象（戦後日本から移住してきたいわゆる新移住者の方々）：8月7日、午後6時半よりJCCCにて行います。セッションは英語または日本語のいずれか参加者に都合の良いほうで行います。セッションは録画されます。 

新二世グループ対象（戦後の日本人移民の子供世代）：8月8日、午後6時半よりJCCCにて行います。セッションは基本英語となります。
