Doors Open 2026

Doors Open 2026

Founded in 1963, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre is dedicated to fostering friendship through culture. The Centre invites you to experience the building as a layered space shaped by both public presence and quieter forms of cultural care.

Follow the idea of omote-ura (often translated as “surface and the stories within”) to explore how cultural life is sustained through visible activities and less-seen practices involving coordination, restraint, and repeated acts of making and gathering. Embark on a gently guided experience designed to be explored at your own pace, while inviting moments of looking, listening and quiet observation. Move through several guided pathways that highlight art, architecture and everyday cultural work, including exhibitions by contemporary Nikkei artists, such as Nami Ueno, Yuka Yamaguchi, and Marina Van Raay, and the “Friendship through Culture” exhibition, glimpses of martial arts and cultural classes, and engage with materials drawn from the Centre’s spring programming. These moments offer the sense that public activity and behind-the-scenes labour coexist together in everyday cultural life. Interpretive prompts and volunteers are available to provide context, and it is encouraged to wander, linger and notice what feels meaningful to you.

The Gift Shop will also feature a curated selection of seasonal items. Light hospitality and seasonal displays create a welcoming atmosphere without spectacle. Rather than revealing “hidden” spaces, this offers a moment to experience how the Centre’s public-facing life and its inner rhythms work together to support continuity, care and shared belonging. The experience is designed to be accessible and welcoming – an invitation to step inside, move through the building with intention and leave with a deeper sense of how culture is sustained over time.
