Join us in welcoming Suzanne Hartmann for a reading and Q-&-A about her book The Nail That Sticks Out: Reflections on the Postwar Japanese Canadian Community.

Officially launched on Oct. 29, 2024, at the former Toronto Buddhist Temple on Bathurst Street, we are excited to bring her book to the JCCC!  Soon after its launch, it garnered inclusion in the 49th Shelf “Our Fall 2024 Nonfiction Preview,” CBC's “54 Works of Canadian nonfiction to check out this fall” and Hamilton Review of Books “Independently Published Bestsellers List: October 2024.” It’s also been featured in Vancouver’s The Bulletin, the Toronto Star, Nikkei Voice, L.A.’s Discover Nikkei and on CBC Radio One North by Northwest. The book will be available for purchase at the JCCC Gift Shop.  

The Nail That Sticks Out: Reflections on the Postwar Japanese Canadian Community explores an evolving community and tackles issues of identity, belonging and racism. Steeped in history and cultural arts, it includes portraits of family and community members. Available at fine bookstores everywhere. 

Admission is free.  Light refreshments will be served.
