GREAT ABSENCE
“Kei Chika-ura's delicately devastating second feature excavates a life — and a love story — wrapped in the torn tissue of mental deterioration” - Variety
Takashi, a Tokyo-based actor, is summoned from rehearsal by the police, who have just raided his father’s home in Southern Japan in answer to a distress call. In the cluttered house, the police only find a confused Yohji, clutching a briefcase. His partner Naomi the woman for whom Yohji left Takashi’s mother 20 years before, is nowhere to be found and Yohji claims she has committed suicide. Takashi must find out if there is truth to his father’s claim. Great Absence presents a touching and profound depiction of dementia, father-son reconciliation and a decades-long love story told through lost memories and scattered fragments. Fuji deservedly won the Best Actor prize at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
