THE 35-YEAR PROMISE

“Do you remember the promise that I would write you a love letter?”

Tamotsu grew up in difficult circumstances with few opportunities to attend school. He meets Kyoko, the woman of his dreams and they marry. He tries to conceal that he is unable to read and fears divorce if she finds out. But instead, she gently takes his hand and says warmly: “I’ll be your ‘hand’ from today”. Tamotsu decides he must learn so he can write her a love letter to express his gratitude for always being by his side. Once retired, he struggles to master the pen but remains resolute in his efforts as their 35th anniversary approaches.
