Description

Mary Ikeda and Marie Ikeda’s interview was conducted on January 18, 2010. In the interview, Mary and Marie discuss Ruth Yamada, a prominent figure in their lives and a master of sumi-e, sharing detailed accounts of her life, career, and how they learned from her. They then talk about their personal experiences, including how they were introduced to sumi-e, the milestones of their graduation, and how they began teaching the art form. Mary discusses her background as a commercial artist, explaining how her professional experience in art and other life circumstances facilitated her transition to focusing on sumi-e full-time, both as a learner and a teacher. Marie recounts the many roles she held in the Sumi-e Artists society throughout the years. Both discuss their teaching experiences, the painting styles they have embraced, paintings they have done, and the specific art supplies they prefer to use. Additionally, they reflect on the many demonstrations they have done throughout Ontario, and recount a memorable painting tour in Japan and China with the Sumi-e Society. Their discussion also touches on other members and renowned artists within the Sumi-e community. Towards the end of the interview, they discuss the popularity of Sumi-e and contemplate on the future of the art in Canada.
