Livestream Viewing: Japanese Canadian Monument Opening Ceremony
Announcement for unveiling of the Japanese Canadian Monument
Please join us at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) or Momiji Health Care Society (Momiji) on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 3:30pm EST for the live streaming of the opening ceremony of the Japanese Canadian Monument that is taking place in Victoria, British Columbia. A pre-show program will begin at 3:30pm, and the opening ceremony livestream will begin at 4:00pm. Further information per livestream location is outlined below.
The Japanese Canadian Monument lists the names of all Japanese Canadians uprooted in 1942 AND a second set of names of children born after uprooting and up to and including March 31, 1949, after which freedom to return to the coast was fully granted.
The monument acknowledges the forced dispossession and internment of the community during World War II while celebrating their resilience and impact on the region. These names and locations engraved on the wall provide a stark illustration of a community torn apart by policies that were driven by a confluence of race, economics, and power. To set them in stone here is to ensure they are never again forgotten or marginalized.
