Louise Noguchi Artist Talk
From sunrise to sunset on October 4, the JCCC Gallery played host to Louise Noguchi’s moving, participatory artwork, The Shape of Loss, as part of the all-night city-wide arts festival, Nuit Blanche. Over 12 hours, nine artists drew the outlines of fishing boats confiscated from Japanese Canadians following the bombing of Pearl Harbour. 13 announcers read the name of each boat, often sharing the story of their family’s boats. As each boat was drawn, the canvas blackened, the lines of each boat coalescing into one amorphous form -- the shape of loss. The durational, all-night performance was visited by hundreds of visitors who sipped tea and watched as the performance unfolded. The drawn boats remain on view until The Shape of Loss closes on January 23, 2026.
Join Louise in learning more about her inspiration and creative process through a special artist talk on November 20th at 7PM in the Heritage Lounge. No registration required. Light refreshments will be provided.
