FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – TORONTO (ON) — June 29, 2026 — The Toronto Japanese Film Festival is pleased to announce the award winners for its 2026 edition, celebrating outstanding achievement in contemporary Japanese cinema.
The festival’s Grand Jury Prize for Best Film has been awarded to HOW DARE YOU?, directed by Mipo O. To quote one of the judges: “Few films about children have interweaved a coming-of-age narrative with contemporary socio-political concerns quite so deftly as director Mipo O and screenwriter Ryo Takada have with How Dare You? Anchored by truly wonderful turns from both child and adult performers, what's most impressive about this climate-crisis dramedy is how perfectly balanced it is between serious and sweet.”
The jury has also awarded a Special Mention to BLUE BOY TRIAL, directed by Iizuka Kasho. Based on true events, the film brings to light a little-known chapter of Japanese legal and LGBTQ+ history through a powerful courtroom drama set in 1960s Tokyo. Our jury commented: “Kasho Iizuka’s feature is also an impeccably crafted piece of entertainment; the kind of perfectly judged social drama you thought that most film industries around the world had forgotten how to make.”
The Kobayashi Audience Choice Award has been presented to KOKUHO, directed by Lee Sang-il. An epic and emotionally rich portrait of artistry, ambition, and sacrifice within the world of kabuki, KOKUHO captivated Toronto audiences, as it did record number of Japanese audiences, with its powerful performances, sweeping visual style, and profound exploration of tradition and the cost of greatness.
“These three films reflect the extraordinary range and vitality of Japanese cinema today,” said James Heron, Director of the Toronto Japanese Film Festival. “From intimate human drama to historically urgent storytelling and grand cinematic spectacle, this year’s award winners demonstrate the emotional power, artistic ambition, and cultural depth that continue to define the best of Japanese filmmaking.”
