Defined by Bone

Defined by Bone

A Choreographic Process Showing

A story of adaptation and resilience, Defined by Bone choreographed by Mayumi Lashbrook presents an intimate look into a sliver of Canadian history by unfolding an intergenerational narrative, and intersecting dance and theatre. This work brings together the muscles of Canadian history, the blood of Japanese ancestry, and the bones of a story written in prejudice. Defined by Bone is a reclaiming of history, contextualizing what is carried forward in our communal mosaic.

As a biracial Nikkei artist, Mayumi offers a unique opportunity to explore connections to culturally relevant experiences. “With a surge in anti-Asian hate crimes, I see an urgency in sharing my family’s history of displacement and isolation. Our story is/was harsh and a repetitive narrative that is part of our country’s history that cannot be forgotten. The reminder of these cycles of oppression help steer us on the road to equity and bring to light the role we each play in achieving communal liberation.”

Mayumi carefully and courageously crafts the experience of forced displacement through dance theatre, projection and sound design. Witness the creation process at the JCCC October through December, with a culminating work-in-progress showing on December 17th at 12-1pm.
