John Uchikata was born on September 11, 1916. He talks about his early childhood living in Japan with his Uncle after losing both his parents. John talks about his childhood and teen years, and what led to the military draft. John returns to Canada and describes his early adulthood before the war. He discusses how he opened the first Japanese food distribution business in Toronto and meeting his wife. He discusses how his life changed when WWII broke out. John talks about how he came into contact with the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC). He discusses the time and money he and a few other Japanese Canadians helped in the building of the JCCC.
