God Said This

"God Said This" is a full-length play by award-winning American playwright Leah Nanako Winkler that explores themes of family, faith, identity, and mortality within a dysfunctional Japanese-American family in a small town as they face the matriarch's cancer diagnosis. The play is a sharp, funny, and compassionate look at what it means to confront the unknown together, with a desire to represent the experiences of mixed-race families on stage.

Directed by Kunji Ikeda, this work brings a cast of Japanese Canadians across Canada to Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal to share in this deeply meaningful look into a mixed Japanese diaspora family dynamic. "God Said This" will be approximately 1hr 15min with the chance for open, community dialogue to unfold how the themes from the play affect us as Japanese Canadians. Featuring Dawn Obokata (Toronto), Yoshie Bancroft (Vancouver), and Morgan Yamada (Edmonton).
