Makoto’s Shinkai’s breathtakingly beautiful and thoughtful film is the most popular and beloved animated film in Japanese cinema history, winning numerous awards world-wide including the 40th Japanese Academy Award for Best Animated Film.

After a comet falls in a mountain village and reverses time and space, two teenage strangers, a Tokyo boy named Taki and a country girl named Mitsuha each wake up in the body of the other. This odd phenomenon continues to happen from time to time but they adjust, communicating by leaving notes for each other. With the arrival of another comet, they decide that they want to meet, but fate conspires to keep them apart…

About Toronto Anime Matsuri

In 2018 the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre will expand its Toronto Japanese Film Festival and month screening program to include the TORONTO ANIME MATSURI. This extension of our Toronto Japanese Film Festival and will feature screenings of anime films as well as other contemporary Japanese cultural events including J-Pop performances in our Kobayashi Hall performance space.

The JCCC has a long history of screening anime films and it is our hope to expand and broaden this initiative under the umbrella of Toronto Anime Matsuri. Our new initiative will mirror the TJFF with screenings throughout the year to align with availability of new materials, and a weekend fest devoted specifically to  ontemporary culture in August 2018. Our partners in this initiative are Anime North, J-Rock North Promotions and the Japan Foundation.

We will be screening 2 films this winter to launch this exciting new contemporary cultural offering.
